When it comes to dentistry, Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz at the Los Angeles Institute of Clinical Dentistry & Ruiz Dental Seminars has successfully taught clinicians about the benefits of minimally invasive dentistry. Take, for example, dental crowns.
Traditional crowns necessitate cutting a tooth by about 75% to prepare for the crown. This is usually done when decay has advanced and the tooth cannot be repaired with a filling. This drilling often dives under the gum line, which can harm the gum tissue. After the tooth is covered by a cap which is cemented even below the gum line, this material irritates and inflames gum tissue, ultimately leaving the patient with gum disease as bacteria is trapped.
With supra-gingival dentistry, our goal is to keep dental restorations, including fillings, veneers, crowns, and onlays above the gum line. We accomplish this by using cutting age materials and techniques to preserve healthy tooth structure and offer patients healthier restorative options with fewer root canals. At the LA Institute, we teach topics including margin enamel preservation & reinforcement, margin elevation, bonded bridge preparation, incremental cavity filling, temporization, and complex onlay preparation, for starters.
We also teach how porcelain veneers make excellent substitutes for crowns on the front facing teeth. Veneers don’t need to go below the gum line, which makes them supra-gingival. Using partial coverage porcelain onlays are another excellent substitute for a dental crown. Onlays are a good choice when a large area of the tooth has been compromised and can’t warrant repair with a filling material. Using the advanced technologies of adhesion with a bonded porcelain onlay, much less of the original tooth needs to be removed. With the bonded adhesion of the onlay, the weakened tooth is reinforced and strengthened. Now you have a strong, sturdy restoration that remains above the gum line, preventing damage over time. The results are also more esthetic with more of the natural tooth remaining. When it comes to healthy alternatives to crowns, onlays and veneers make excellent options.
At our workshop, Porcelain Onlays and Full Crowns Using Supra-gingival Dentistry, Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz will show you a new way to prepare and cement porcelain onlays. You will see step-by-step how to use supra-gingival dentistry techniques. You will learn the techniques and principles for preparing a tooth, temporization, as well as sensitive-free, easily bonded cementation. You’ll also be doing tooth preparations using supra-gingival dentistry techniques for non-metal onlays and full crowns in realistic simulators.
