Prevent Gingivitis First

Making sure that your patients are educated on the risks of gum disease starts with providing them the knowledge to prevent the biggest cause of gum disease – gingivitis.

Too often, people overlook the first symptoms of periodontitis – bleeding, red, and swollen gums. These symptoms are caused by gingivitis, or plaque buildup. It’s important, as a dental professional, to let your patients know that any of these symptoms signify a risk of contracting gum disease, and they need to come see you immediately for a consultation.

However, you can prevent these emergency visits by advising all of your patients on the risks of gingivitis. Make sure to clearly explain the following points:

•You may not be aware you have gingivitis: According to the Mayo Clinic, gingivitis can be mild at first, and many patients won’t even be aware that they have gingivitis. To make sure that you don’t have gingivitis, it’s important to have regular teeth cleanings, as well as looking out for the aforementioned red, swollen, and bleeding gums that are symptomatic of gum disease.
•It’s caused by poor oral health: As with almost any other dental issue, gingivitis occurs when patients don’t properly take care of their oral health. High soda intakes, lack of a regular brushing or flossing schedule, or even genetics, can lead to a person contracting gingivitis.

While it’s a serious condition, gingivitis is easily preventable and can save your patients time, money, and pain. If you feel you need more training as a dental professional in order to better serve your patients, you can attend a seminar from Dr. Jose-Luis Ruiz.
